February 6th is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), also known as Female Genital Cutting (FGC).

FGM/C is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the removal of all or part of a female’s genitalia for non-medical reasons

This year International Day of Zero Tolerance to part of #EndFGM is  the United Nations Spotlight Initiative to eliminate violence against girls  & women globally. The UN has set forth an ambitious agenda to address FGM/C and other gender violence issues.

It is because of my experience treating these patients that I so firmly believe in the power of education. I urge each and every member of the Brigham community to learn more about FGM/C in order to advocate for its eradication. Each of us can play a role in ending gender violence locally and around the world.
