International Day of Human Space Flight

The age of the human spaceflight began on 12 April 1961, when the Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to round the Earth on his spacecraft from Vostock I. Flight lasted for 108 minutes . In 2011, the General Assembly proclaimed 12 April to be the International Day of Human Space Flight, to mark the 50th anniversary of the first human spaceflight. On 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen, took the first human space flight, a landmark event that paved the way for the exploration of space for the good of humanity.

Background

April 12, 1961, was the date of the first human space flight, administered by Gagarin . This historic event opened the way for space exploration. In 2011 the UN declared April 12 because the “International Day of Human Space Flight” to remember the first human space flight and to market the exploration and use of space for peaceful purposes and to the advantage of humankind.

Commemorative stamps depicting human space flight are released on or round the International Day of Human Space Flight within the past. A statue of Gagarin , the world’s first cosmonaut to journey in space , is found about 40km (about 25 miles) from Saratov, Russia. it had been erected in 1981.

Significance of 12th April in Space Exploration

In the Soviet Union, 12 April has been celebrated since 1963 as the Cosmonautics Day and still occurs in Russia and other former Soviet states. Yuri’s Night, also referred to as the “World Space Party”, is an international celebration launched in 2001 in the USA to mark the 40th anniversary of the flight of Gagarin. The day on which the first Space Shuttle flight, Columbia’s STS-1, was launched in 1981 was also April 12.
